Open tool →Which tool should you start with?
- You found something and do not know what it is. Start with the Pest Identifier. It works from what you saw, where, and what signs it left.
- You know the pest and want a budget. Go straight to the Cost Calculator and compare its range with the quotes you receive.
- You are deciding between DIY and a professional. Use both: identify the pest first, then check the DIY materials figure against the professional range.
A sensible order of operations
- Identify the pest. Run the Pest Identifier, then read the matching guide to confirm the details.
- Remove what attracts it. Cut off food, fix leaks and seal gaps before any treatment, or the problem tends to return.
- Decide on DIY or professional help. Minor ant, cockroach or spider problems are often manageable yourself. Termites, bed bugs and rodents in walls usually are not.
- Get written quotes. If you hire help, collect at least three and compare what each includes.
What the tools cannot tell you
The Pest Identifier narrows things down to a type of pest, such as ants or cockroaches, not the exact species, and it cannot see hidden infestations behind walls or under floors. The Cost Calculator uses US dollar ballpark ranges and does not know your local labor rates, your property, or what an inspection would find.
Treat both results as a starting point. For serious infestations, health concerns or structural damage, contact a licensed pest control professional. Read our Disclaimer and Editorial Policy for how we build and review them.
